A Desktop Commander alternative for people who are not developers

Desktop Commander is excellent if you write code. If you just want Claude to sort, find and clean up files without a terminal, Desktop Steward is the other option.

What Desktop Commander is

An open-source MCP server that gives AI chat apps a terminal, file editing with diffs, process control and, with a paid plan, remote access from ChatGPT and phones. It is popular with developers for fixing code, reading logs and managing servers. Installation is through npx, a config file or Docker.

What Desktop Steward is

A Claude Desktop extension for everyone else. It installs with a double-click, has no terminal, separates folders Claude may read from folders it may change, asks through a macOS window before deleting or replacing anything, and keeps every change undoable for seven days.

Which one to pick

  • You write code, manage servers or want a terminal in chat: Desktop Commander.
  • You want Claude to tidy Downloads, find duplicates, free disk space or find documents, and you want a safety net: Desktop Steward.
  • You can install both. They do not conflict.

Desktop Steward is open source under MIT, like Desktop Commander. Its security model says plainly what it does and does not protect against.
