How to let Claude organize your Downloads folder, safely
Downloads is where files go to be forgotten. Here is how to let Claude sort it in a few minutes without risking a single file.
What you need
- The Claude Desktop app for Mac.
- Desktop Steward, a free extension that gives Claude access to your folders with rules and undo. Install it in one click.
Step 1: ask for a plan, not for action
Open a new chat and press the + button, then Connectors → Add from Desktop Steward → “Tidy up Downloads”. Or type it yourself:
Look at my Downloads and propose how to sort the files into folders by type and month. Show me the plan with counts first. Don't move anything yet.
Claude lists what it found: 214 files, 1.9 GB; 96 PDFs, 58 images, 31 installers, 12 archives, 17 other. It proposes folders like Documents/2026-09, Pictures/2026-10, Installers, Archives.
Read the plan. Change what you do not like: “keep installers where they are”, “put everything older than a year into one Old folder”.
Step 2: let it move, with a safety net
Go ahead with the plan.
Claude moves the files with the move tool. Because this is more than 10 items, a window opens on your Mac first: “Move or rename 214 items? This can be undone.” Click Allow.
Step 3: check, and undo if you want
Open Downloads in Finder. If anything looks wrong, say “undo the last change” and every file goes back to where it was. You have seven days to change your mind.
What Claude cannot do here
- It cannot delete anything without a confirmation window on your Mac.
- It cannot touch folders you did not open to it. By default that is Desktop, Documents, Downloads and Pictures for reading, and only Documents/AI Workspace and Downloads for changes.
- It cannot run commands or create programs.
The full list is in the security model.
